A Morning to Remember

December 11, 2017

The alarm goes off. Another early dark morning awaits him to be filled with life and light. His warm knees hit the floor to thank God Almighty for another nights rest, and protection throughout the day for himself, and family. The fireplace door latch shifts upwards and is opened to smoldering coals. It doesn't take long for the dark family room to be illuminated and warmed by the flames of fire again.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee brings a sense of comfort and satisfaction to the awakening body. The butter sizzles as it hits the hot skillet, following the dropping of fresh eggs thereafter. Four pieces of bacon accompany the same skillet mixing the the bacon grease to season the eggs. The toaster rings, the eggs cooked to perfection, the bacon crisp yet somewhat tender. He sits down to a warm meal in the quietness of the morning. Extra effort is made to stay quiet, to savor in the moment. His bible on the left side, plate in front, coffee in the right hand. The words read:

"7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. "      Luke 2:7-14

He hesitates and pauses from taking a sip of coffee... "No room... it seems as though not much has changed since that night." Several minutes of thought and prayer are followed, by much self reflection. The chair creeks as he leans back and stretches out his legs. "Do I have room for Him today, the Saviour of the world?"

The dishes softly hit the counter, and the last sip of warm coffee finished. He grabs the boots drying from the base of the fireplace. The warn duck coveralls are gently lifted, the rigid coat quietly zipped up. "Let me have room for you today Jesus" he softly whispers as he opens the front door. The sub zero chill is inhaled signifying another work day beginning. A crunch is made from the overnight snowfall compressing against the work boot. "Daddy loves you" he says as he looks back through the door at the dancing light from the fireplace.

All is calm, all is bright.
